U.S. Executive Office of the President - Data Scientist [Washington, D.C.]

“This position is located in the Executive Office of the President (EOP), Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), Office of Translational Research (OTR). ONDCP's mission is to develop, implement and sustain the President's agenda regarding trafficking and use of illicit drugs and misuse of prescription drugs through its National Drug Control Strategy (NDCS).”

Responsibilities include the following:

  1. Responsible for providing professional consultation in the application of statistical and data science theories, techniques, and methods in conducting studies and analyses assessing drug use availability, the consequences of drug use, and the effectiveness of drug programs.

  2. Collects, compiles, and analyzes demographic and other data, and develops measures to track the overall performance of the NDCS.

  3. Identifies gaps in ONDCP research and data collection, or to identify areas requiring additional focus.

  4. Develops and conducts data science projects, often with other government partners, for determining data needed to fill gaps in the overall government program for statistics in the area of drug use or to further examine the effect of changing socio-demographic circumstances related to drug use.

  5. Plans, researches, and implements the full scope of investigative projects aimed at analyzing substance use and drug trafficking trends in order to facilitate greater understanding of the problems and issues involved.

Requirements include a degree in “Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position,” or equivalent experience.

Coding it Forward - 2022 Civic Digital Fellowship/Civic Innovation Corps [Remote]

Coding it Forward welcomes applicants to the 2022 Civic Digital Fellowship/Civic Innovation Corps. “The Civic Digital Fellowship is a first-of-its-kind model that empowers early-career technologists to explore careers in public service through a 10-week internship.”

“We recruit Fellows across four areas of practice: software engineering, data, design, product management.”

Civic Digital Fellowship: Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an undergraduate (2- or 4-year) or graduate degree program at an accredited institution of higher learning.” 

“Civic Innovation Corps: Must be currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a bootcamp or certificate program (minimum of 12 weeks), undergraduate, or graduate degree program.”

“The hourly wage for undergraduates starts at $15 (~$6,000 for 10 weeks) and for graduate students starts at $17.50 (~$7,000 for 10 weeks). Fellows working in-person will also receive housing. Additional financial assistance is available, beginning at $1,500, to those with demonstrated need.”

New America - Deputy Director of Communications [Washington, DC]

New America is looking for a Deputy Director of Communications to help “shape and grow a communications team committed to telling PIT success stories, growing the field and pipeline of PIT practitioners, demonstrating examples of PIT in practice, and using new mediums, events, opportunities, and audiences to grow the reach of the program and its leadership. Working across verticals and with PIT leadership, the Deputy Director of Communications will help establish, then nurture and oversee, a burgeoning hub of information and activity for the public interest technology ecosystem as well as a university network (PIT-UN) that is vibrant, diverse, and rapidly expanding.”

Responsibilities include the following:

  • “Work with PIT Leadership and the Senior Advisor, Strategic Engagement and Impact Communications to shape, implement, iterate, and evaluate the strategic communications plan;

  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day execution of that communications plan, working to ensure that editorial, multimedia, digital, web, email, and media-based initiatives are operating efficiently and effectively;

  • Serve as the primary communications liaison to PIT stakeholders at every level, transitioning effectively between program areas and understanding the messaging requirements and needs of each;

Stanford Institute for Human-Center AI - HAI Visiting Artist Program [Bay Area, CA]

“The HAI Visiting Artist Program, co-sponsored by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI (HAI) in partnership with the Stanford Institute for Diversity in the Arts (IDA), serves to augment human creative expression and experience by creating an interdisciplinary residency for artists working at the intersection of art and AI. The program immerses artists in a community of fellow artists, scholars, thinkers, and practitioners from across the entire Stanford campus, offering opportunities to engage through tech-arts salons and other events and chances to work with faculty and students.”

“Successful applicants may be emerging or established but must have a national reputation and a record of commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration. For the purposes of this program, the term “artist” refers to anyone engaged in creative work from any discipline: literature, music, dance, visual or graphic art, spoken word performance, design, multimedia, as well as STEM and fields beyond arts and humanities etc. “Artist” can also expand the definition of the traditional scholar or artist to include those who identify as scholar-artists, artist-activist, or other preferred identifications to name their practice.”

2022 Data Science for Social Good Summer Fellowship, Carnegie Mellon University - Data Science Mentor (FT) [Pittsburgh, PA]

“The Data Science for Social Good Fellowship is a summer program to train aspiring data scientists to work on machine learning and data science projects with social impact. Working closely with governments and nonprofits, fellows take on real-world problems in education, health, energy, public safety, transportation, economic development, international development, and more.  For three months they learn, hone, and apply their data science/ML/AI, analytical, and coding skills, collaborate in a fast-paced atmosphere, and learn from mentors coming from industry and academia.”

“Data Science/ML/AI Mentors are a critical component of the Fellowship. Mentors work full-time for 12-weeks at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh with dedicated teams of fellows and provide hands-on technical mentoring and data science expertise to the projects. Each mentor leads (typically 2 or 3) teams of Fellows (3-4 people each) and serves as a project lead and technical adviser. Each Mentor is teamed up with a Project Manager who leads the relationship with the project partner as well as makes sure the team is working well together and moving forward. Mentors also help us teach workshops and tutorials over the summer and are an integral part of the organizing team.”

What will you do?

  • “Mentor students and recent graduates working on applied data science projects;

  • Coordinate with government and non-profit partners, including scoping, ongoing updates, field trials & evaluation, and eventual implementation & deployment;

  • Provide technical leadership and support on applied data science projects;

“An ideal mentor has a strong technical background, typically PhD (in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Quantitative Social Sciences, or Public Policy) and several years of industry/government experience. We want mentors to have real-world data science/ML experience as well as experience in leading teams and working with students and industry/government partners.”

2022 Data Science for Social Good Summer Fellowship, Carnegie Mellon University - Project Manager [Pittsburgh, PA]

“Project Managers are a critical component of the Fellowship. We are looking for project managers with 2+ years of experience managing technical projects with real-world impact. Project Managers work full-time for 12-weeks at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Project Managers manage 2 to 3 teams of 3 to 4 fellows each scoping and developing data science projects to help partner organizations solve real-world problems with social impact. Project managers will work closely with their teams, partner organizations, data science mentors, and senior staff to ensure that their teams have the resources and requirements they need to develop solutions that meet their partner organizations’ and societal goals.” 

What you will do

  • “Lead and assist teams planning, executing, and delivering projects;

  • Coordinate teams’ work with project partners to gather the requirements and resources necessary to meet project goals;

  • Manage team workflow, fairly distributing work across team members while taking into account skill, ability, and growth;

  • Set up and manage tools and processes that facilitate project work, including project plans, calendars, communication channels, and code repositories;

Required qualifications

Carnegie Mellon University - 2022 Data Science for Social Good Summer Fellowship [Pittsburgh, PA]

“The 2022 Data Science for Social Good Summer Fellowship is a full-time, 12-week summer fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. The fellowship will last from May 30, 2022 to August 19, 2022. The fellowship is a project-based training program designed to train responsible data scientists and ML/AI practitioners with strong skills in solving real-world social impact problems in collaboration with governments and non-profits and an understanding, excitement, and passion for solving problems with social impact.

Successful fellows have different skill profiles and backgrounds in order to create a collaborative community. Everyone has some programming, statistics and data analysis skills in addition to a passion for making a social impact. Some are stronger at Computer Science and Machine Learning. Others have a strong Applied Math or Statistics background. Some come from a quantitative Social Science, Economics, or Public Policy background. Others have Physics or Chemistry or Geography or Linguistics degrees. We’re not expecting you to be awesome at everything. Tell us what you’re good at and what you’d like to learn. In addition, personality and communication skills matter! If you’re passionate about a cause or social issue, tell us about it in your application. If there’s a recent project you’ve done that you’re proud of, we’d like to hear about it.

All fellows are expected to attend the entirety of the fellowship in person. There will be no remote option for participating in the program. Fellows are paid a stipend for participating in the program that is more than enough to cover travel, housing, and other expenses for the summer.

The program is designed for current students and recent graduates, and has accepted current undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, as well as recent graduates who are currently working.

The program accepts non-U.S. citizens, as well as U.S. citizens and has sponsored J-1 visas, as well as had students with F-1 visas attend.”

TechCongress - Congressional Innovation Scholars [Washington, DC]

“We are bridging the divide between Congress and the technology sector by placing tech savvy students like you-- who have recently finished a Master's program or PhD, or are early on in your career-- to work with Members of Congress and Congressional Committees in order to build capacity in Congress, train cross-sector leaders -- who can understand the challenges of government and in the technology community -- and keep Congress up to date about the latest challenges and opportunities relating to technology.”

“As a Congressional Innovation Scholar you will:

  • Work with TechCongress to choose a placement with a Member of Congress or Congressional Committee and report directly to a senior staffer (like a Legislative or Staff Director) in that office from mid-June 2022 through mid-April 2023.

  • Perform duties similar to other Congressional staff by applying your experience in technology to a variety of work, including:

FASPE - Design and Technology Fellowship

“FASPE is an intensive, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership.”

“This year, FASPE Design and Technology will be awarding fellowships to 15 to 17 graduate students and early-career professionals working in engineering, architecture, computer science, design, and related fields. Fellows will spend two weeks in Germany and Poland, where they will visit key sites of Nazi history and participate in daily seminars led by specialized faculty. The program couples the power of place with academic rigor and many informal opportunities for creative exchange. Along with FASPE's historians and ethicists, Dr. Mona Sloane and Dr. David Danks will serve as faculty members for the 2022 program, bringing together their expertise on technology, ethics, policy, and design.” 

“FASPE Design and Technology applicants must be actively pursuing a career in architecture, design, computer science, data science, engineering, or any related professions. Applicants must fit into one of the following two categories: 1) be enrolled in a graduate program in design, architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, computer science, statistics and applied math, electrical engineering, or a program in a closely related field at the time of their application, or 2) be working in a related field, with an undergraduate degree earned no earlier than May 2017 or a graduate degree no earlier than May 2019.”

Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, Harvard University - Fellowship [Cambridge, MA]

“The Berkman Klein Center’s fellowship program provides an opportunity for innovative thinkers and changemakers to come together to hone and share ideas, find camaraderie, and spawn new initiatives. Internet Archive - Legal Intern [Remote]

“The Internet Archive is seeking a Legal Intern to gain hands-on experience working alongside the Legal & Policy team on issues related to the Internet Archive’s ambitious mission to provide universal access to all knowledge.”

“You will participate in all aspects of the in-house legal & policy team, including litigation, policy, intermediary liability, privacy, and compliance. Your workload will vary and may include: legal research, regulatory and policy analysis, various writings for different audiences, and in-house counseling. During the summer you will be full time. During the semester we require at least 20 hours per week. Internships are unpaid but a small stipend may be arranged depending on circumstances.”

Partnership on AI - Director of Programs and Research [San Francisco / Remote]

  • Extensive work experience overseeing program design, development, implementation and evaluation across several topic areas.

Partnership on AI - Director of Policy and Public Affairs [San Francisco / Remote]

“The Partnership on AI (PAI) is hiring a highly strategic and knowledgeable Director of Policy and Public Affairs to build a portfolio of dynamic policy outreach and public affairs to advance PAI’s theory of social change and impact.”

“The Director of Policy and Public Affairs will develop PAI’s public affairs action plan in collaboration with PAI Staff and Partners, including the identification of policy trends, PAI priorities and jurisdictions, and Partner priorities; the development of policy briefings and convenings; the creation of an annual progress monitoring and reporting knowledge hub; and, the development of PAI positions on emerging issues.”

In this role, you will “Identify opportunities for PAI to engage with the responsible AI public policy community to promote the development of effective public policy,” and “Monitor, interpret, and analyze global policy developments related to responsible AI,” as well as “Monitor emerging topics in the media, developing PAI’s capacity to assess issues in order to proactively take positions and a point of view on pertinent issues and topics,” and “Work with the Director of Content and Communications to develop materials for policy outreach, publicize our work through both media relations and thought leadership development,” among other tasks.

The Notre Dame Technology Ethics Center (ND-TEC) and ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab - Technology Ethics Postdoctoral Fellows [South Bend, IN]

“The Notre Dame Technology Ethics Center (ND-TEC) and ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab (the Lab) are seeking applicants for technology ethics postdoctoral fellowships from eligible graduate students or recent graduates. The appointment will be for a minimum appointment period of July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. Fellows can apply for a one-time, one-year renewal. Our goal is to hire 2–3 postdoctoral fellows.”

“We invite applications from doctoral students and recent graduates across disciplines who are writing dissertations on or are engaged in major research on topics related to technology ethics, broadly construed. Disciplines could include philosophy, engineering, data science, information studies, business, sociology, anthropology, history, law, critical studies, etc.

While fellows of this cohort will spend the majority of their time conducting independent research, they will also each teach one undergraduate seminar per semester for the technology ethics minor (the same seminar can be taught both semesters).

Applicants should be (a) enrolled in either a doctoral program or in a graduate program that leads to a terminal degree in that field (e.g., law or medicine) or (b) a recent graduate of such a program (within two years). 

Postdoctoral fellows will receive an annual stipend of $60,000/12 months. Fellows are expected to be in residence at the University of Notre Dame during the academic year.”

Berkeley Institute for Data, University of California, Berkeley - Postdoctoral Scholar-Responsible AI [Berkeley, CA]

“The Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) is seeking a creative and driven postdoctoral researcher for an Independent Postdoctoral Fellowship in Responsible AI.”

“Research topics might include (but are not limited to) automation and job displacement, algorithmic bias, explainable AI, and other concerns of inequality and distributive justice globally. We are especially interested in developing methods for evaluating AI systems with respect to emerging standards in government regulations about privacy, bias, fairness, and explainability. Ideally the work will have the potential to affect policy.

The Data Science and Responsible AI Postdoctoral Fellowship is a full-time two-year position at BIDS. It is made possible by funding from Accenture Applied Intelligence.

The Fellowship holder will be expected to produce novel research results communicated in academic publications and to lead a workshop or seminar series on the topic of the research; other possible contributions include open-source scientific software, curated datasets, and white papers and blog articles on data science and responsible AI.”

Bank of New Zealand - Privacy & Data Ethics Seniors Manager [Auckland, NZ]

The Project Director role is ideal for someone with at least six years of policy experience working on economic justice issues at local, state, or federal levels. Specifically, this position will focus on jobs and hiring issues, while also contributing across a range of Upturn’s policy priorities. You will:

  • Lead Upturn’s work on jobs and hiring, and other areas of work in economic justice, helping to define strategies and goals within projects;

  • Supervise day-to-day project work, providing consistent feedback, support, and mentorship to staff;
